This two-day journey takes you from the lively city of Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains to the desert town of Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara. Experience scenic mountain passes, Berber villages, the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, and the Valley of the Roses along the ancient caravan route.
The highlight is reaching the vast Sahara Desert. Marvel at the dramatic desert landscapes of sculpted red dunes before reaching Merzouga, where you’ll have a chance to go on a camel trek, witness stunning sunset and sunrise over the dunes, try sandboarding if that’s an activity you’re interested in. Spend the night in a traditional desert camp under star-filled skies.
2 Days Trip From Marrakech To Merzouga
Our 2 day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with an early morning pick up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. You will leave for the Merzouga desert with our expert tour guide/driver from our agency.
From there, we will depart for the High Atlas Mountains going through the Tizi N’tichka mountain pass, one of the highest roads in Morocco (2260m in altitude). There will be stops for panoramic views and take pictures of the Atlas peaks and valleys dotted with tiny Berber villages clinging to the slopes.
Take a break to savor a leisurely lunch in the beauty of your surroundings, before continuing our journey down from the mountains toward the captivating dunes of Erg Chebbi; these dunes are also called Merzouga Dunes.
Upon reaching, embark on a 1h 30 min camel trek and venture through the Erg Chebbi sand dunes to reach the nomadic desert camp with a break to watch the incredible sunset over the dunes. This is a great opportunity to take lovely pictures and also try sandboarding in the sand if you are interested.
While on the back of your dromedary, we will continue to the Berber Camp Merzouga, where you will be greeted with a glass of mint tea and relax till dinner time. In the evening, indulge in a traditional Moroccan feast, savoring the flavors of aromatic tagines and other flavorful dishes, before gathering around a crackling campfire.
Then enjoy traditional nomadic drumming music, storytelling, and dancing under a star-filled sky. Day one of our 2 days private tour from Marrakech as you spend the rest of the night under the stars in a luxurious/traditional nomad tent in this Morocco desert camp surrounded by the dunes.
The program of the second day of our 2 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins early in the morning. You will be roused by your camp guides to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Following that, we’ll eat breakfast, take a shower, and get ready to return to Marrakech.
We will leave the camp and take a camel ride back to the starting point to meet our driver/tour guide. If you’d prefer a different kind of transportation, we have a 4×4 ot ATVs quad biking as an extra activity to Merzouga town.
The journey is long again from south east to the center of Morocco. Leave Merzouga and journey through the lonely environment of the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge Canyons and its incredible rock formations carved by the Todra River over millennia. Marvel at the towering limestone cliffs that reach up to 600 feet (180 meters) high.
Continue to the Dades Valley, also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs”, famous for its ancient kasbahs carved into the valley walls and strange rock formations that look like monkey fingers sticking out of the ground. We will try to make a stop so you can get a closer look at these interesting rock shapes.
Our Marrakech desert tour 2 days continues as we drive through the Draa Valley, known as the “Valley of the Roses.” This fertile region is famous for its rose cultivation and annual Rose Festival, where you can witness the harvesting and processing of damask roses for rose water and other products.
We will also make some stops to enjoy the beautiful views of the river that gives name to the valley (Draa River). It is Morocco’s longest river.
Then continue as we pass through the Anti Atlas mountain range to reach the town of Ouarzazate, nicknamed the “Hollywood of Africa.” Take a short break to explore and get a great photo opportunity at Atlas Film Studios, which has provided the backdrop for movies like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.
After, go downtown to explore the city’s impressive Kasbah of Taourirt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fortified village dates back to the 17th century and features intricate mud-brick architecture and ornate decorations. We will have lunch in this province.
Afterwards, our 2 days tour itinerary from Marrakech continues with a visit at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and one of the most famous historic fortified kasbahs in Morocco. This striking example of Moroccan earthen architecture has been featured in numerous films, including Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones.
Later on, our 2 days tour from marrakech will conclude late in the afternoon as we drop you off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech.
