4 Days Tour From Fes To Merzouga
The 4-day tour from Fes to Merzouga begins as we pick you up bright and early from your hotel or riad in Fes at 8:30 am. Depart the city and head south towards the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Our first stop will be the town of Ifrane, often referred to as the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco due to its alpine-style architecture, low temperature, and snow. We’ll make a quick 15-minute pause here so you can grab a coffee if you want.
The next leg of our journey takes us to the cedar forest of Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, you will have a moment to enjoy the famous Barbary Apes, also known as Macaques. Next, we wind our way through the dramatic landscapes of the Middle Atlas, passing small Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
We’ll make a stop in Midelt, the country of apples. You can take a break for a delicious lunch in this beautiful city before we get back on the road again driving through the Atlas Mountains alongside the Ziz Valley with a stop for a panoramic view of the valley before reaching Erfoud. The town is famous for its fossils and pottery crafts, which you can explore if time permits.
In the afternoon, arrive at Merzouga and check into the hotel or riad overlooking the golden dunes that surround the town.
We kick off the day with a thrilling 4×4 excursion through the vast Merzouga desert. Our first stop will be the village of Khamlia, where we will be treated to the captivating sounds of Gnawa music over a glass of mint tea. The Gnawa people came from Sub-Saharan Africa and their unique genre of music blends African and Arabic styles. Hereafter we will visit the lake with the pink flamingos.
Next, we drive off-road to M’Fis, an abandoned village with mines of Galena, a mineral once used to make Mascara. You will also have the opportunity to visit the nomad people living in nomadic tents behind the Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, you’ll gain insights into their traditional way of life, centered around herding animals and seasonally moving their tent dwellings. Interact with the friendly locals and enjoy their hospitality with a cup of mint tea.
In the afternoon get ready for a 1h 30 min epic camel ride across the high dunes of Merzouga to the nomadic campsite. Along the way, we’ll pause at the summit of a high dune, where you can experience the thrill of sandboarding down the slopes and also witness a breathtaking desert sunset.
Upon arriving at the cap, the staff will welcome you with a glass of mint tea. After dinner, gather around the campfire and watch as your Berber hosts entertain you with traditional drum music and dances. Spend a magical night under the starry desert sky. This is the highlight of the 4-Day Itinerary from Fes to Merzouga.
Wake up early to witness the breathtaking desert sunrise on the top of the dunes close to the camp. After breakfast and shower, we depart Merzouga heading towards the Dades Gorges, driving through Rissani along the way. If today happens to be a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), seize the opportunity to visit a traditional Moroccan market.
From Rissani, our route will take us through the picturesque Ziz Valley, a verdant oasis dotted with lush palm groves and ancient kasbahs (fortresses). You will have many stops along the way to take cool pictures as you make your way to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. This narrow canyon features towering limestone cliffs that soar up to 600 feet on both sides, carved over millennia by the Todra River.
Embark on a scenic hike beside the cliffs of the canyon and along the river’s edge. Free time for lunch on the way. Next, we drive through the road of thousands of Kasbahs to reach the country of figs; Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel overlooking the Dades Valley.
After a delicious breakfast in your hotel, you will get to explore the area. Mandatory stops include the “monkey fingers” rock formation. Then drive through the lush palm groves and follow the winding Ziz Valley. En route, we’ll stop at a panoramic spot to have a traditional Moroccan tea while admiring the stunning scenery.
Next, we’ll travel northwards to Midelt, where you may catch a glimpse of nomadic settlements with their distinctive goat-hair tents scattered across the fields. After a delicious lunch, our four-day tour will take us through the magnificent cedar forests where you will have another chance to feed the mischievous Barbary monkeys.
Continuing our journey, we’ll make a stop in the alpine town of Ifrane for a coffee break. Finally, we’ll drop you off at the airport or your accommodation in Fes by late afternoon, marking the end of your unforgettable 4-day trip from Fes to Merzouga.
